A message from AustCyber's CEO Michelle Price


I’ve looked up and it’s the end of July … someone please pass the slow-up button. But, do we actually know how to slow up if we had the chance?!

On that point, one of our most exciting announcements this month is that we’re partnering with Microsoft to launch the first phase of Australia’s first nationally coordinated Cyber Security Traineeship Program. This will support around 200 people to access jobs in our industry while also creating a benchmark for traineeships as an integrated pathway into a cyber security career. The Program is being funded by the AustCyber/Microsoft partnership and the Australian Government's Cyber Security Skills Partnership Innovation Fund, which will help to increase the pipeline of candidates entering the cyber industry.

Importantly, the program will have a strong focus on diversity. It kicks off with a Cyber Skills Bootcamp to better enable participants from diverse backgrounds to enter the cyber industry - including women, veterans, First Nations people, neurologically diverse people and displaced workers. The training will be delivered through a selection of training providers nationally and establish a baseline level of skills to facilitate entry into the Certificate IV in Cyber Security.

Speaking of diversity, AustCyber is proudly part of the CyberShift Alliance. This group is a collaboration between ISACA, SheLeadsTech, FITT, CISO Lens, AWSN, the Australian Signals Directorate, ISC2, AISA, DOTM, EY Australia, Forrester Research and us, and aims to address culture change within security. The alliance was born from an International Women’s Day event run by AWSN and ISACA aptly titled ‘Don’t reward the brilliant jerk’ and our ‘culture shock’ event at Australian Cyber Week 2020. Last week, the CyberShift Alliance group hosted an online event on toxic workplace cultures attended by 500+ people. Stay tuned for more events over the next few months!

On 7 July, we released the United States Market Insights Report 2021, the first in a series of reports being produced as part of AustCyber’s global engagement strategy to assist Australian cyber security companies looking to scale and expand into international markets. The decentralised provision of cyber security in the US (and global) markets means that demand is large, diverse, and constantly changing. This report explores areas of growth, opportunities and risks for Australian cyber security product and service exports. It aligns closely with AustCyber’s initiatives and activities, providing clear direction for Australian cyber companies looking to scale.

Today, we released our thirteenth episode of ‘OzCyber Unlocked’. This episode, we explore the Essential Eight – the Australian Government’s recommended top eight cyber security risk mitigation strategies. Guest host Michelle Mosey, our US Ecosystem Lead who is back home in Australia at the moment, is joined on the pod by Suzy Clarke (Executive GM for Security at accounting software company Xero), Keith Howard (Group CISO at the Commonwealth Bank), Jennifer Stockwell (National Cyber Security Principal at Telstra) and Andrew Pade (General Manager Cyber Defence Operations at Commonwealth Bank and former head of cyber security at the Reserve Bank of Australia). Our cyber spotlight features Airlock Digital, an Australian cyber security company that enables you to easily create and manage secure allowlists (formerly known as whitelists).

I’m also excited to announce that Australian Cyber Week 2021 is being held 25-29 October. Stay tuned for the line-up of events and activities which will include some of our annual favourites (like the National Missing Persons Hackathon) and some new ones.
